Jaguar’s have been spotty we all know that, but I’m talking performance wise and in driving ability. If it were just on reliability you all would know my answer:

Kinja'd!!!

but even then it drove ok, the power is what made the car. But my vote would go to the XKR. It was more GT than outright sports car, and from what I have read, some people have said the R performance seemed like an afterthought. The XKR-S made it better in some ways, but there was still the underlying GT-ness of the car. Which do you guys think are the worst R/R-S cars?

“underlying GT-ness”? The XK is a GT car. In no world is it a sports car. Any way the actual answer is the second gen XJR.

Take a comfortable, smooth, quiet luxury car and remove all of that because lap times are important for limos. Now I’m not against fast limos but that speed should never come at the expense of luxury.

Oh yea I know. But some people, mostly owners and Jag fanboys think that the R treatment turned it into some kind of sports car.

The XJR is a good one though and I agree with you about the speed at the expense of luxury. Either try and do both or dont do it at all in something like this.

I just want to stop in and defend the S-type R. Friend had one for 2 years and it was pretty reliable for him. It always had a CEL on, but it worked great.

R treatment, nah. RS treatment, yeah and not for the better. Jags are too heavy to be properly sporty and in the case for both the XK and XF the RS treatment ruined the looks.

Yea RS did ruin the looks. Boy racer looks and British luxury lines dont mix well. It just looked like they were trying too hard.

I think the X type was a mondeo underneath. Not the s type.

Counterpoint, it doesn’t matter that the XKR is GT-like.

We live in the real world, not the Nürburgring. The XKR is good-looking and comfy car which is more than fast enough - plus it makes a menacing two car garage paired with a Quattroporte from the same era.

It was never a serious Porsche 911 rival, it’s just cool.

Worst R model? Probably the S-Type, because it’s an S-Type.

The main problem with Jaguar’s R cars is that they’re mostly automatic, then there’s the grey area of reliability and the fact that BMW M cars exist.

But Jags are cool. Good looks, big engine, I’m happy.

Good points. Some owners thought think their XK’s are credible sports cars wrongly. I just have sometimes thought that R cars (outside of the F Type) are in a weird performance gray area.

If you think about it, the XK is in the comfortable position and the F-Type is in the grey area.

The XK may look like a sports car which leads people the wrong way. But as far as chassis, engine, interior, etc goes - it is clearly focused towards being a GT car. Likewise, it ticks all the boxes for a good GT.

The F-Type meanwhile goes for the sporty path, but we all know it’ll never drive like a Porsche, so it’ll always be second best.

At the of the day, Jags are rarely class leading nowadays. But few cars on sale look as good, have as many high displacements engines on offer or provide as much leather and wood. It is what it is. :/
